Building the Bench Early: Top Talent Marketing School

The marketing skills gap does not open up at the graduate hiring stage. It opens years earlier, in the space between what university teaches and what a client meeting actually demands. The Marketing Association's Top Talent Marketing School exists to close that gap, and Human Digital has sponsored students through the program for several years running.
The 2026 cohort kicked off this week. Human Digital is sponsoring two students this year: Rajat Bhatia from Auckland University of Technology and Jonathan Cardoso Mendes from the University of Auckland.
What the program is
Top Talent Marketing School is a bootcamp-style initiative run by the Marketing Association in partnership with the University of Auckland Business School. It gives high-performing marketing students from the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology two things most degrees cannot: advanced practitioner-led training, and a paid sponsorship placement inside a working agency or marketing team.
The structure for 2026 runs across two two-day bootcamps, held at the Marketing Association's Parnell offices in Auckland:
10 and 11 September
- How to Thrive in a Team
- Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning that Works
- Essentials of Effective Briefing
- AI Meets Marketing
16 and 17 November
- Critical Thinking for Marketers
- AI-Powered Storytelling
Each sponsoring company commits to a minimum of one week of work experience for their student, and attendance at the Top Talent Networking Event, where students and sponsors meet for the first time. Eligibility is restricted to students who have completed at least their fifth semester of study in a marketing or related qualification, which keeps the cohort concentrated on students close to entering the workforce rather than early-year generalists.
Why Human Digital sponsors Top Talent
Agencies talk about talent shortages and then wait for talent to arrive fully formed. Sponsoring Top Talent is a way of acting on the problem instead of describing it.
One of Human Digital's strongest current hires, Joyce, started as a Top Talent sponsored student and was hired permanently in January 2025. This proves is not just a CSR line item, it is a recruitment pipeline that is good for the industry.
The second benefit is students entering the program have been trained in segmentation, briefing, critical thinking, and AI-assisted marketing which they can put to use during the experience week.
Human Digital's 2026 students
Rajat Bhatia joins from Auckland University of Technology. Jonathan Cardoso Mendes joins from the University of Auckland. Both will complete the full bootcamp program and their placement week with the Human Digital team.
Thanks to John Miles, Dr Drew Franklin, Emily Clelland, Parker Martin and the wider Marketing Association team who run this program every year.
Human Digital is a B2B growth agency with teams in Sydney and Auckland. Sponsoring the next generation of marketers through programs like Top Talent is part of how we think about long-term brand building: the same discipline we apply to client work, applied to the industry itself.
